After much debate and considering logistics, I believe the best way to do things is to strictly keep it gift cards/cash. I’ll list a few things below that I would have otherwise gotten “registered” at Target or Bed, Bath & Beyond and whoever gets those things first can notify me, while I will subsequently inform everyone else so that there are no duplicates.
As far as a housewarming party itself, ehhhh… I’ll hold off until I move into my next apartment in January 2013 — which I am certain will be a 2-3 bedroom with more space to accommodate guests. While I have the space for about 20-25 people right now, without any furniture, there’s really no need to have that many people here with no place to recline or take a load off.
However, I will still be planning to have a gathering for my birthday, as I doubt that I will be dating (or traveling out of town) on that date (March 30) or the weekend that begins that day. If you live in the tri-state and want to come, let me know. If you are out of town and will be here, come on over.
As a generous host, I’m open to guests periodically anyway, so those well-wishers who want to partake in some sort of housewarming type thing are welcome to visit (with suitable notice).
WITH REGARDS TO GIFTS, GIFT CARDS, CASH, ETC.
Contact me directly regading monetary gifts, as I am setting up a new PayPal account (bank information, money orders or in-person cash is obviously okay). For those who do not currently have the new address and want to send gift cards, gifts or well-wishing cards, let me know and I will send it inbox or offline.
GIFT WISH LIST (IF YOU PLAN TO OFFER ANY OF THESE SPECIFICALLY, NOTIFY ME ASAP SO THAT I CAN DESIGNATE ACCORDINGLY):
— Curtains/Drapes (two for living room, one for kitchen)
— Cookware, Tupperware, Cutlery/Silverware
— Barista/Coffee Maker
— Hookah Shisha/Equipment
— Dining Table Cloths
— Queen-Size bedding material
— Water Filter (for tap and water pitcher)
— Oven Mitts, etc.
— DVD Player
— Toiletry Items (Soaps, Lotions, etc.)
— Ashcan (for regular trash, as NYC residents must use recycling bins separately)
— Bar Stool(s)
— Bath Accessories
— Small Chairs
— Computer Desk
— Any Knick Knacks from Brookstone or stores of that ilk
These are the specific items that should not be duplicated. In lieu of any other gifts — cash, gift cards, personal-touch gifts, etc., any subsequent gifts are welcomed and appreciated. As many of you know, I went from the shelter (albeit very briefly) in the summer of 2010 to a friend’s apartment for the past 18 months or so and therefore I do not have any living room furniture. Rather than going overboard by attempting to acquire those higher-cost items, I can save any monetary gifts and pool it together to have living room furniture.
As always, even with this non-column entry, I welcome all constructive feedback and suggestions. Please advise regarding any changes that could be made in order to make this plan come off any more effectively than currently planned.
