On Harold Camping and Those of His Ilk
Harold Camping is clearly a nutjob and a charlatan. Let me make my feelings be made known about that up front (if you weren’t already acutely aware, after listening to his drivel for two decades now). He pulled this same stunt in 1994, when I was in 10th grade and I never forgot it. Little did I expect the man who inaccurately “predicted” when the world would end and stated “I’ll have to go back to my Bible to see where I went wrong” — to come back and do it again.
BUT HE DID.
The problem is, why is this generating so much chatter? Why are there so many people who actually believe what he is saying to be truth? This generation (and Camping himself, apparently) really got away from even FLIPPING THROUGH, much less STUDYING and RIGHTLY DIVIDING the Word of God/Word of Truth. If they hadn’t, there would be no way that Camping, his followers and other professional charlatans would be able to sway these people.
Worse than that, he’s making millions off the propaganda, which we New Yorkers see splattered all over billboards, subways, buses, outside of our office buildings and the mindless group thinkers holding up placards and condemning people to hell (loudly) in Times Square — should you have the misfortune of going through there for whatever reason, as is.
JIM JONES IS ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE SAYING “YOU AIN’T DOIN’ IT RIGHT, HAROLD!” (And no, to you youngins, I’m not talkin’ about Jomo from Harlem).
That’s what gets me irate. He’s a snake oil salesman, sure, and there are many out there (including 98.7% of these “Televangelists”) but to be profiting off something that is so explicitly discouraged in the Bible and CLAIM to be coming FROM the Bible in all of your speeches, well, let’s just say, unless Christ DOES decide to play the joke on everyone and come back Saturday evening — completely exclusive to Camping’s assertions — I say that Camping should be tarred and feathered in the heart of Times Square.
Or better yet, in the midst of the construction down at World Trade Center.
It grieves me that some peoples’ hearts are troubled (some of them make light of this situation, but you know some of them are TRULY worried and filled with a bad case of the “What Ifs?!?!?!” when you’re not able to see them cowering and saying Hail Maries and confessing every sin they’ve ever committed). I don’t know whether to be upset, sad or laugh. But what have you.
Let’s look to the Bible on this (if you are not Christian, please do not be offended, you can turn off your station now, or feel welcome to study along with me from this point forward):
1 JOHN 4:1-6:
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. 4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
YOU SEE WHAT VERSES 5 AND 6 SAY, RIGHT? At any rate, all six verses speak to our ability to discern people like Camping apart from true prophets.
NOW, ONTO WHY CAMPING IS WRONG, AND ANYONE ALONG WITH HIM IS WRONG AND ALWAYS WILL BE WRONG:
3 As He (Christ) was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” 4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. 5 “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many. 6 “You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. 7 “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. 8 “But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.
CAMPING USES ALL THE GOINGS ON IN THE MEDIA WITH REGARDS TO CURRENT EVENTS (Wars, rumors therein, weather catastrophes, etc.) TO DRUM UP SUPPORT FOR HIS MOVEMENT — BUT CHRIST CLEARLY SAID, THESE THINGS WE SEE IN MAY 2011 ARE JUST THE BEGINNING OF WHAT’S TO COME.
Side Note: You can read all of Matthew 24 for very good detail on all of this, but you can do this at your leisure. I shan’t post it all here.
THIS IS ULTIMATELY WHY CAMPING IS DEAD WRONG. END OF DISCUSSION.
42 “Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. 43 “But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 44 “For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.
45 “Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 “Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes. 47 “Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 “But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My master is not coming for a long time,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards; 50 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know, 51 and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
No man. NO MAN — knows the day that Christ will return. And He will return at an hour that you do not expect, so it is USELESS to “predict” when that will occur. Not a particular day, MUCH LESS a particular hour!
LET ME LEAVE YOU WITH THESE JEWELS:
15 “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him. 16 “This is according to all that you asked of the LORD your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, let me not see this great fire anymore, or I will die.’ 17 “The LORD said to me, ‘They have spoken well. 18 ‘I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 ‘It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him. 20 ‘But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’ 21 “You may say in your heart, ‘How will we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’ 22 “When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.
Ultimately, there are some people who have turned their back on the faith because they could not stand under the trials of life. Even as I have rebelled, sinned and turned away from the Way that I know is right, I never wavered in my faith nor dispelled it. It troubles me to hear people who once spoke so fervently about the LORD and His word, to now speak “There is no God, there is no heaven and hell”, and a lot of that sentiment springing from disgust in their lives in recent months and years.
Then there are those who do this and were never saved to begin with.
for anyone who does not know Christ and wants to take the first step (which is reading, understanding, believing then confessing the aforementioned Scripture, which I will post in its entirety — in that order), because it makes no sense to call out Camping and ridicule those who are naive enough to believe him, without offering an alternative. But I will offer Romans 10:9-13 as a
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.”
PS: You can share this with your friends, I made it completely public. There’s so many more Scriptures I could apply to this, but I never intended for it to be a Bible Study lesson, merely giving a word of warning to the increasing numbers of people who are fearful because of the false prophet Harold Camping and his foolishness.
